Back page poster: 121 and counting by Kevin Sims and Berni Georges
The Salvation Army is now officially at work in 121 countries. Thirty of these have been added in the past 25 years – with this figure rising to 36 if you count countries where Salvation Army activities have recommenced. This rapid growth is all the more remarkable when compared to the movement's early years (most organisations expand rapidly at first, then slow down as time progresses). The era that is usually thought of as The Salvation Army's time of explosive growth, from 1879 onwards, saw 40 countries added in 25 years – only four more than in the past quarter of a century.

The back page of the new-look October 2010 issue charts this growth, from the UK in 1865 to Sierra Leone, Nicaragua and the United Arab Emirates this year.
